Tagalong Golf Resort & Waterfront Condominiums

There's a story about a pastor who developed an overwhelming passion for golf. He became very good at it, and he loved to boast of his drives, chips and putts.  As time passed, his love of the game grew into an obsession. He could talk longer about his game than he could preach. Eventually, he lost all perspective, and one Sunday he told his parishioners that he was sick, and instead of preaching, he went golfing. One of the angels in heaven brought this to the attention of God. God promised to keep an eye on him. The next Sunday, the pastor again lied to his church about some excuse, and went to the course instead of worship.  The angel said to God, “You better do something soon!”

“You watch this,” said God.

The pastor stood on the first tee. He raised his club. God raised his almighty hands. The pastor swung. God brought down his hands. The club struck the ball. Sailing the entire length of the par four fairway, the ball hit the green, rolled and dropped into the hole. The pastor was flabbergasted. So was the angel.

“Just watch,” said God.

On every single hole, God made the pastor get a hole-in-one. At first, the man's glee and pride grew and grew. And then gradually, the pastor began to appear dejected. After the last hole, the preacher went home, his shoulders slumped in despair. He never again skipped church to go golfing.

“What happened?” said the angel. “I don't understand.”

“Well,” said God, “who was he going to  boast to?”

When you first encounter Tagalong, you might feel a bit like that pastor:  Here is a golfing phenomenon that's too good to be true. But it is impossible to stay quiet about it. You see, Tagalong is not your normal golf course. Oh sure, they've got your pro-shop, complete with the best in clubs, equipment and apparel. They've got a fabulous clubhouse where you can eat, drink and lie about your scores. They've got your carts and all that good stuff.

But Tagalong is not typical.

For one thing, they are world-class. Originally designed in the 1920s and featuring imported Scottish greens, the course itself is modeled after the world famous St. Andrews of Scotland. The elegantly restored stone clubhouse still carries a faint reminder of bagpipes echoing from the treeless mountaintops. For another thing, this is the only golf course in the Northwoods that sits right on a lake. That's right: this is golf on the lake.

And of course, since it is at the lake, there is so much more here than just golf. You can experience great casual dining in the main dining room, or grab a burger and beer at Frank's place. Dock at the Pumphouse, Tagalongs’ quaint waterfront tiki bar, and stop in for a bite to eat and a drink. You can rent a boat or a kayak. Shoot, if you are the scuba diving type, you might even enjoy finding some balls at the bottom of the lake, off the eighth green.

Tagalong's director of condominiums, Bruce Weegman, says: “Here you have the kind of first-class amenities you'd expect to find in the Brainerd area, but not as pricey, and without the bumper-to-bumper traffic on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons.”

The best thing is, when night comes, you don't have to go home. You see, Tagalong combines world class golf, fine dining, the lake and exquisite lodging. You can choose from a one, two, or three bedroom condominium.  Whichever one you get will be fully furnished, and it will have a kitchen, a fireplace, a patio or balcony, and a sleeper sofa in addition to the queen sized bed (or beds). You'll probably get a lake view. If not, you'll have to suffer through watching the sun go down on the quiet, clipped grass of the golf course.

You want to swim? Tagalong has got you covered. There is an indoor pool, along with a jacuzzi and a weight room in the Lochaven Building. If you don't like that, you can go jump in the lake (that's not recommended in January). If you do happen to be outside in January, you can also warm up those cold muscles with a therapeutic massage.

If you have golf-prone relatives, they will thank you profusely for having your wedding at Tagalong. If you want, you can invite up to two-hundred of them. You yourself might be pleased by a ceremony in the fresh air by the lake, under a tent by the golf course, or in the formal ballroom.  Tagalong's banquet planning professionals will make the reception a breeze, and a day to remember. And you won't have to go far – say, a few steps – to a great honeymoon location by the lake.

Maybe all this talk about golf, the lake, and weddings has you envious, because right now, you need to be doing business. The envy is natural, of course, but why not have your next conference, banquet or corporate retreat right at Tagalong? You can mix business and pleasure. Or better yet, business and golf (which, of course can be either a pleasure or a pain).  Tagalong can accommodate groups from ten up to 200. If you need six bedrooms or less, you can sleep your whole group in the bunkhouse. On the other hand, for a very special event, Tagalong will close the entire resort to the public so that the only people there belong to your group. Of course, almost any option between these two is possible. There are at least seven different meeting and/or banquet rooms to choose from for your group.

Maybe you have never owned a cabin at the lake because you just aren’t into hunting and fishing. It might be that the golf course and the clubhouse are more your domain than the woods and the outhouse.  “Going ‘up North’ could mean driving only two hours to Tagalong, where there are still some deluxe two bedroom condominiums for sale”, states Bruce Weegman. “At Tagalong, you don’t have to open the cabin in the spring, or close it in the fall. You don’t have to come up and work all weekend to maintain the property. By the time you get here on Friday evening, there will probably still be enough light for a round of golf. On Saturday, with no chores to do, you can simply have fun.”

All the amenities listed above, with lodging, apply to the for-sale units as well as the fireplaces, the furnishings, the custom mill work and granite counter tops. Once again, you'll be faced with the choice of either the lake or the fairway to look out upon. Decisions, decisions.

Tagalong sits on Wisconsin's Red Cedar Lake between Rice Lake and Spooner, and not too far from Hayward. It's the perfect distance from the Twin Cities – far enough to really get away, but not so far that you have to mortgage the house for gasoline to get there. Between the lake, the golf course, the food, and the amenities, there really is something here for everyone. Maybe you should tag along some time soon and see for yourself.
