For the past decade or so, we’ve been surveying members who move from their primary residence to Wisconsin. In all cases, these past members (who are now voting citizens of Wisconsin) are offered life-time Honorary Membership—the vast majority accept the offer. In turn, we ask them from time to time to influence their local legislators on our behalf. The ten-point Move-to-Wisconsin survey focuses on how content they are with choice they made, and what, if any, advice they have to others considering such a move. (To make this report easier to follow, I’ll use the 80/20 rule. I’ll report “most’ (meaning about 80%) and “least” (meaning about 20%). For example most of our members moved to Wisconsin to retire; the least move was for business, health, or financial reasons. The years of ownership before the move ranges from 10 to 45 years with most about 30 years, and most had an existing home to move to while a lesser number either made major improvements or built anew. Was the move everything they expected it to be? Most replied “yes,” hardly anyone said “no” – but a surprising number claimed “mostly.” Knowing what they know now, would they make the same decision? An overwhelming positive response! When asked what is the most satisfying aspect of the move, answers were based on their original reasons for buying in the first place; living in peace and quiet far from the hustle and bustle; slower pace and & less traffic; having only one home to tend – those sort of things. Least satisfying aspects of Wisconsin retirement are mostly on the loss of close friends, neighbors, relative left behind in the move. To a lesser extent, there are disappointments in the higher rural cost-of-living; distance from shopping malls; shortage of part-time work, and (to a much lesser extent) getting to know full-time resident neighbors. Advice for newcomers from these ‘old pros’? Plan, plan, plan - before coming. Know your area and the people before making the decision then don’t put it off or hesitate; the water is fine!
