South Shore - Lake Superior Wisconsin Articles

South Shore WI Region Profile

The Superior South Shore of Wisconsin shares a rich maritime history with its close neighbor to the north, Duluth Minnesota. While it is the smaller of the two Twin Port cities, it doesn't lack any of the charm or appeal that keep people coming back for more. The city of Superior offers breathtaking views of the lake, unique attractions and events, and easy access to the over 431 lakes scattered found throughout Douglas County.

One great place to visit while in the city would be Barker's Island, located in Superior's picturesque harbor. It a four mile long sandbar that draws a diverse crowd from history buffs there to tour the historical sites to the thrill seekers looking to water ski, or some other outdoor adventure sport. Among the historical attractions on the island are the Superior Shipbuilders Marina and the Seamen's Memorial Statue, a tribute to those who lost their lives when the Edmund Fitzgerald sank in 1975.

If you're looking for a party, Superior has many colorful events and festivals that run throughout the year. Some of the largest include the Barker's Island Sailing Regatta, The Scandinavian Festival, and the Dragon Boat Festival.

The Superior South Shore area has plenty of outdoor fun for those who want to be out and about. The summer time is the perfect time to lace up the hiking boots and explore the many trails that lace the area. Those who want to take advantage of the lake effect might want to start out with the Osaugie Waterfront Trail, a 5.2 mile trail that winds along the edge of the Superior and Allouez Bays of the lake. Fisherman, canoe, and kayak enthusiasts will fall in love with the nearby Brule River. Known as the "River of Presidents," the flow of this river is much more even and reliable than any of the other rivers in the area because it only has one dam, located at its end that affects the water level. It is this "untouched" quality that makes it so appealing to both fishermen and canoers alike.

When winter rolls around, Superior/South Shore buzzes with activity. Snowmobile and ATV riders will enjoy tearing down over 325 miles of groomed trails. Snowshoeing, downhill skiing, cross country skiing, ice fishing, and ice-skating are other popular activities that can be found in the area.

Nature lovers will want to experience the three State Parks in the region. Pattison State Park is home to the tallest waterfall in Wisconsin, 165 foot high Big Manitou Falls along with 31-foot Little Manitou Falls. Amnicon Falls State Park rests on ancient lava beds that date back more than one billion years. The rapids and waterfalls that trademark the Amnicon River is a testament to awesome geological might that created this natural treasure. The Brule River State Forest might remind some of a certain Robert Redford movie. Anglers can take a quiet moment and soak in the calming beauty of the flowing water before dropping their hook in after the trout that call this river home.
