Okoboji, the Perfect Iowa Vacation Destination

Okoboji is a unique resort community in Northwest Iowa. It is the ideal place for a family vacation, romantic getaway or exciting summer and winter activities. When planning your next leisure, business, family, or romantic getaway, consider the undiscovered secrets that Okoboji has to offer to all who visit.

Five glacier-carved lakes surround Okoboji making this destination perfect for water sports like swimming, boating, fishing, sailing, water-skiing, canoeing, and in the winter, ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and snow-mobiling. For those who prefer land activities, there is an amusement park, nearby world-class golfing, tennis, and multiple parks lined with trails and host to cozy picnic spots.

Fishing

The chains of lakes comprising the Iowa Great Lakes have long harbored a reputation as being an angling paradise. Big Spirit, at 5,864 acres, is Iowa’s largest natural lake and the northern-most of the region’s Great Lakes. Spirit supports year-round fishery and is known for its consistent walleye, perch, pan fish and bass fishing. West Okoboji,
one of just a handful of blue water lakes in the world, is known for its depths (up to 140 feet) and clear water beauty. This is an excellent fishing spot, however may sometimes be a challenge in the summer because of its popularity as a spot for water-sports. The “spring bite” and “fall bite,” are excellent and well recommended.

East Okoboji,
the third largest lake in the system, is a long and narrow with river-like traits and a shallower configuration. East Okoboji is often a good alternative when the more popular spots are crowded or unproductive.

Water sports and Other Sports

One of the very best ways to enjoy Okoboji and the surrounding Great Lakes is on or next to the water. Whether you love swimming, snorkeling, scuba, boating or fishing there is a wealth of activities to choose from. If you prefer the more extreme sports, there are plenty of places where you can rent jet-skis, wakeboards, water-skis, parasail and much more. If you prefer land-based activities, you can enjoy biking, rollerblading, ice skating and cross country ski rentals available.

Nature Parks and Attractions

The Iowa Great Lakes Trail is a paved 14 mile trail running through the area. A few sections of the trail require riding on city streets but the majority of the trail is seperate and in an area away from other roads since the trail was built over an old railroad. There are several long bridges on the trail crossing the lakes, and many areas on the trail with benches, picnic tables, and restrooms. The trail is open year round and all hours.
