Central WI Region Profile

Located in Adams County, Lake Petenwell is dubbed the best kept secret in all of Wisconsin. Located one and a half hours northwest of Madison, Lake Petenwell is the 2nd largest lake in the state at a whopping 23,000 acres. On most days the waters here are calm and perfect for those who want to take out their canoe, kayak, or spend some time and relax with the family on a pontoon boat. But if it's speed you crave, Petenwell is deep enough for power boats as well, so you can water ski and wakeboard to your hearts content. And with over 100 miles of shoreline around Petenwell, there is plenty of room to fish or just enjoy the view.

Castle Rock Lake is also located in Adams and is the 4th largest lake in Wisconsin at 16,000 acres. Like its larger counterpart, Castle Rock offers a multitude of recreational opportunities both on and off the water. Fishing, swimming, and sail boating are but a few options available to visitors here.

Life off the lake isn't too shabby either. Rome and the surrounding communites offer a wealth of amenities, catering to all sorts of tastes and styles. The active outdoor types can snowmobile, bike, or hike down many of the trails in the area. Antique stores, sporting good supplies, and specialty shop of all kinds await the savvy consumer here.

Plenty of dining and eateries are in the area, some with boat dock access. So after a long day on the lake, pull up to a mooring and continue the party on land.

Nature enthusiasts will want to visit the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge, just minutes from Lake Petenwell. It is home to a whooping crane repopulation program dedicated to returning this majestic bird back to prominence in the area. Another famous landmark worth a look is Petenwell Rock, the largest rock formation in northern Juneau County. Legend says that a pair of lovers jumped to their death into the Wisconsin River rather than be separated. Some say the rock was named after one of the lovers, Peter Wells, while some attribute the name to an early settler who owned the land at one time.

Rome is also only 40 from the Dells, giving visitors easy access to all the fun down there.
